About this test

A Complete Blood Count (CBC), also called a hemogram, is a routine blood test that evaluates overall health.

It measures hemoglobin, RBCs, WBCs, platelets, and red cell indices (MCV, MCH, MCHC).

Low hemoglobin indicates anemia, often from iron, B12, or folate deficiency. High WBC count suggests infection, inflammation, or leukemia, while low WBC may signal viral infections or bone marrow problems. Abnormal platelet counts point to bleeding or clotting disorders.

A CBC helps diagnose infections, anemia, and blood cancers, and helps monitor treatment.

Questions about this test

When should I get the CBC (HO) test?

You should get a CBC (hemogram) test during routine health check-ups, or if you have fatigue, weakness, fever, frequent infections, unexplained bruising or bleeding, or pale skin. Doctors also recommend it before surgery, during pregnancy, and to monitor conditions like anemia, infections, or the effects of medications such as chemotherapy.

How should I prepare for the CBC (HO) test?

No special preparation is needed for a CBC (hemogram) test, and fasting is not required. Drink water normally and wear loose sleeves for easy blood collection. Tell your doctor about any medications or supplements you take. If other tests, like blood sugar or lipid profile, are ordered with it, you may need to fast.

Do I require fasting for the CBC (HO) test?

No, fasting is not required for a CBC (hemogram) test. You can eat and drink normally before the test. However, if your doctor has ordered other tests with it, such as fasting blood sugar, a lipid profile, or liver function tests, you may need to fast for 8–12 hours.
