The FBS test measures blood glucose after 8–12 hours of fasting. It is a key test for screening and diagnosing diabetes.
Fasting blood sugar levels are classified as:
High FBS indicates diabetes or insulin resistance, increasing the risk of heart, kidney, eye, and nerve damage. Low FBS (below 70 mg/dL) suggests hypoglycemia, causing shakiness, sweating, and confusion.
The test also helps monitor diabetes treatment.
You should get an FBS test if you have symptoms of diabetes, such as excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, blurred vision, or slow-healing wounds. It is also recommended for routine check-ups after age 30–35, and for people with obesity, high blood pressure, PCOS, or a family history of diabetes. People with diabetes use it for monitoring.
Fast for 8–12 hours before an FBS test, drinking only plain water. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, chewing gum, and smoking during the fast. Give your sample in the morning. Take your diabetes medicines or insulin after the test unless your doctor advises otherwise, and avoid alcohol the night before.
Yes, fasting is required for an FBS (fasting blood sugar) test. You should fast for 8–12 hours before giving your sample, drinking only plain water. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, and chewing gum during this time. Don't fast longer than 14 hours, as this can affect the accuracy of your results.
