Iron Profile With Transferrin Saturation
₹1,000
The iron profile test measures serum iron, Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC), and transferrin saturation to assess the body's iron status.
Normal values are roughly: serum iron 60–170 µg/dL, TIBC 250–450 µg/dL, and transferrin saturation 20–50%.
Low serum iron with high TIBC and transferrin saturation below 20% indicate iron deficiency anemia, often from blood loss, poor diet, or pregnancy. Transferrin saturation above 45% suggests iron overload or hemochromatosis, which can damage the liver, heart, and pancreas.
The test helps diagnose anemia and monitor iron therapy.
You should get an iron profile with transferrin saturation test if you have fatigue, weakness, pale skin, hair loss, brittle nails, or shortness of breath, or if a CBC shows anemia. It is also recommended for pregnant women, people with heavy periods or chronic blood loss, and those with suspected iron overload or hemochromatosis, or on iron therapy.
Fasting for 8–12 hours is recommended before an iron profile test, and you may drink water during this time. Give your sample in the morning, when iron levels are highest. Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours before the test, and inform your doctor about any medicines, recent blood transfusions, or pregnancy.
Yes, fasting is required for an iron profile with transferrin saturation test. You should fast for 8–12 hours and preferably give your sample in the morning, though drinking water is allowed. Avoid iron supplements for at least 24 hours beforehand, as they can falsely raise your results.
